We meet those who\u2019ve lost their life savings and reveal many of the perpetrators are forced to scam.<\/span><\/span><\/div><p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt\u2019s really quite prevalent,\u201d said Ontario Provincial Police Det.-Const.\u00a0John Armit, who has investigated romance scams for the past 11 years. \u201cThey are exploiting people who want newfound love.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">In 2024, Canadians reported $58 million in romance scam losses to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">That\u2019s up substantially from pre-pandemic levels.\u00a0In 2018, the scams cost Canadians $22.5 million. In 2017, it was closer to $17 million.\u00a0<\/p><h2 dir=\"ltr\">AI tools help scammers lie<\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">Not only are the scams more common, Armit says, they\u2019re\u00a0also more sophisticated,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/artificial-intelligence-online-romance-scams-1.6745912\">helped along by artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and the rise of online dating.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">When the request for money is made, moving it via a cryptocurrency transfer makes it \u201cvirtually impossible to get back,\u201d said Armit \u2014 though there are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/toronto-fraud-victim-money-returned-nigerian-cryptocurrency-scheme-1.7405600\">some exceptions in which money is recovered.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">To get people to believe in their new online relationships, scammers will also use AI \u201cto spoof an image and a voice\u201d or to write scripts for scammers to follow, he said.<\/p><div dir=\"ltr\"><figure class=\"imageMedia image full\"><div class=\"placeholder\"><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/ais\/1.6772555,1678315489000\/full\/max\/0\/default.jpg?im=Crop%2Crect%3D%280%2C0%2C6000%2C3376%29%3BResize%3D796\" media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/ais\/1.6772555,1678315489000\/full\/max\/0\/default.jpg?im=Crop%2Crect%3D%280%2C0%2C6000%2C3376%29%3B\" sizes=\"(max-width: 762px) calc(100vw - 32px),730px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/ais\/1.6772555,1678315489000\/full\/max\/0\/default.jpg?im=Crop%2Crect%3D%280%2C0%2C6000%2C3376%29%3BResize%3D796 796w,https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/ais\/1.6772555,1678315489000\/full\/max\/0\/default.jpg?im=Crop%2Crect%3D%280%2C0%2C6000%2C3376%29%3BResize%3D1083 1083w,https:\/\/i.cbc.ca\/ais\/1.6772555,1678315489000\/full\/max\/0\/default.jpg?im=Crop%2Crect%3D%280%2C0%2C6000%2C3376%29%3BResize%3D1280 1280w\" alt=\"John Armit sits at the CBC Ottawa office\" data-cy=\"image-img\" \/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"image-caption\">Det.-Const. People believe in fairy tales. People want a happy ending,\u201d said fraud prevention expert Vanessa Iafolla.\u00a0<\/p><div class=\"adContainer-F11hw in-read-SPN_4\"><div class=\"ad-in-read ad-detail \" data-cy=\"in-read\" data-testid=\"ads-in-read\"><div id=\"in-read-68181\" class=\"advertisement in-read\" data-google-query-id=\"CKWPt7KkqpMDFeqFUAYdeF0b3w\"><div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/5876\/news\/canada\/toronto\/story\/read2_0__container__\">\u00a0<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cScammers are expert psychologists.\u201d<\/p><h2 dir=\"ltr\">Be\u00a0skeptical, expert says<\/h2><p dir=\"ltr\">Meanwhile, the number of victims continues to grow.<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Police in Ontario are currently looking for a man who is alleged to have swindled nearly a dozen victims while claiming to be a military member stationed overseas.\u00a0<\/p><p dir=\"ltr\">Police say that after sending out random friend requests on social media, he\u2019d begin talking with the people who accepted and established online relationships with them.\u00a0<\/p><div dir=\"ltr\"><ul class=\"similarLinks\"><li class=\"similarListItem\"><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/romance-scam-military-1.7452999\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Suspect in Canada-wide romance scam claimed to be military member needing help, police say<\/span><\/a><\/li><\/ul><ul class=\"similarLinks\"><li class=\"similarListItem\"><div class=\"label flag\"><span class=\"labelText\">Go Public<\/span><\/div><a class=\"similarLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/gopublic\/romance-scam-sigi-fink-nigeria-1.7185461\" data-contentid=\"\"><span class=\"similarLinkText\">Have you seen this man?
